A SERIES I RECOMMEND: THE MIDNIGHT GOSPEL

2020 has been a year marked by surprise events, mostly terrible unfortunate, but there are a few exceptions to this rule. Early this year, I stumbled across the Netflix show 'The Midnight Gospel'- an adult animated series created by Pendleton Ward and Duncan Trussell that premiered on April 20, 2020.

During the 25 minutes length of each of the eight episodes, the show follows up the main character Clancy.  A spacecaster that travels throughout some unique/bizarre worlds using an unlicensed multiverse bio-simulator. On each planet Clancy arrives, he tries to accomplish his self-proclaimed mission: Interview different individuals (on the move) while they are living their daily lives. The most engaging element of these conversations is its relation to spirituality and conceptual reflection, discussing subjects such as meditation, presence, mental illness, forgiveness, and grieving.

One of the most impressive aspects of this series is that these interviews happen to be based on actual interviews, with real audio derived from Trussell's podcast (The Duncan Trussell Family Hour), then later animated and blended. So, at times the audio and visual narratives clash and collaborate, giving a sort of double narration, enriching its contents and thus our interpretation and sensitivities.

The Midnight Gospel is an unbelievably great animated series. If you are into existentialism and thought-provoking media, and you like visually dazzling colors as I do, then I would highly recommend watching it!
